Alexander Hohla is a contemporary sculptor renowned for his exquisite marble creations that seamlessly blend timeless artistry with modern craftsmanship. Working from his studio in Samobor, Croatia, he has dedicated his career to capturing the inherent beauty and essence of natural stone. His sculptures explore the delicate balance between strength and fluidity, structure and spontaneity, science and art.

Originally trained as a physicist specializing in laser research, Hohla’s transition to sculpture was a natural evolution of his fascination with light and material. The same precision that once guided his scientific work now informs his sculptural practice, where each piece reveals movement, contrast, and harmony within marble.

His diverse body of work includes Turbo (2018), Evolution (2013), Infinitum (2023), and Aquila (2024), each reflecting his meticulous attention to form and detail. In addition to traditional sculptures, he has expanded his artistic repertoire to include marble lighting designs, demonstrating his innovative approach to the medium.

Hohla’s work has garnered admiration for its aesthetic refinement and technical mastery, earning him recognition as a distinguished figure in contemporary sculpture. Whether in private collections, galleries, or public spaces, his pieces invite contemplation, offering a quiet yet powerful presence that connects past and present through form and material.

Whether in private collections, galleries, or public spaces, his work is designed to stand the test of time, offering a sense of calm, contemplation, and connection.
Many artists, stone carvers and stonemasons have always appreciated and held in high regard the extraordinary benefits provided by Lasa marble – and continue to do so. In his '''1894''' study, Dr. Josef Tinzl writes in the German language the following about the marble then known as ''''Vinschgau marble'''': "which – thanks to its dazzling white colour and transparency – seems to allow the life essence to shine forth out of the dead body... ". They sometimes seem alive, the unique sculptures and works, the names of which are as diverse as the artists who created them. To this day, the main working material used is the white Lasa marble primarily extracted from the nearby White Water Quarry – even though the mining techniques used have fundamentally changed. And artists from the four corners of the world are repeatedly drawn to Lasa (Laas) to work on this uniquely special natural stone on site while seeing the Jenn Cliff massif of the mountain, in whose sacred halls the Lasa (Laas) treasure is to be found, in front of them. Of particular importance is the "Johannes Steinhäuser" vocational school for stoneworking, which is located also in Lasa (Laas). The students of the stonemasonry and stone sculpture school come from all over Europe and abroad, and many an internationally successful artist finds his way back to his homeland and the place of origin of the Lasa marble in Lasa (Laas). This is made possible through the international marble symposia that regularly take place in Lasa (Laas), such as the "International Lasa marble Workshop".

== Monumental Works in Laas / Lasa Marble ==

The snow-white Laas / Lasa Marble from the Vinschgau Valley (Val Venosta) region is regarded as one of Europe's most renowned natural stones. For centuries, it has been used for distinguished architecture, important monuments, sacred works of art, and prestigious construction projects. Its exceptional purity, weather resistance, and timeless elegance have earned it an outstanding reputation far beyond the borders of South Tyrol.

Only a relatively small proportion of the total marble production has been used throughout history for monumental works of art and architecture. The majority was employed for the manufacture of gravestones, staircases, flooring, façades, furniture, and high-quality interior fittings. All the more remarkable, therefore, are the buildings and monuments created from Laas / Lasa Marble, many of which are today regarded as some of the material's most significant showcase projects.

From prestigious public buildings and international memorials to impressive monuments and sculptures, Laas / Lasa Marble can be found in numerous countries around the world. The following gallery presents a selection of works that vividly demonstrate the exceptional quality and global significance of this unique natural stone.

The snow-white Laas Marble from the Vinschgau (Val Venosta) region is regarded as one of Europe's most renowned natural stones.

All the more remarkable, therefore, are the buildings and monuments created from Laas Marble, many of which are today regarded as some of the material's most significant showcase projects.

From prestigious public buildings and international memorials to impressive monuments and sculptures, Laas Marble can be found in numerous countries around the world. The following gallery presents a selection of works that vividly demonstrate the exceptional quality and global significance of this unique natural stone.

[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laas_marble Laas Marble] (also referred to as “Lasa Marble”) is a highly prized and valuable natural material with exceptional properties. Since the 18th century, the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dimension_stone natural stone] has been quarried in the area surrounding the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jennwand Jennwand massif] (2,962 m), above the villages of [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laas,_South_Tyrol Laas] (Italian: Lasa) and [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schlanders Schlanders] (Italian: Silandro) in the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinschgau Vinschgau] (Italian: Val Venosta) region of [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Tyrol South Tyrol], transported into the valley and processed. The first quarries and mining leases are documented as early as 1777.

In the mid-1860s, an independent marble industry began to emerge and establish itself permanently in Laas. Laas Marble experienced its first major economic and artistic flourishing between 1880 and 1910, when it was used worldwide in [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art art] and [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sculpture sculpture]. Numerous monuments, [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monument memorials] and sculptures still bear witness to this period today.

From the 1930s onwards, a large-scale marble industry developed in Laas, profoundly shaping quarrying, processing and international distribution, with lasting effects that continue to the present day. Today, Laas Marble is used primarily in the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Construction construction industry], while at the same time experiencing renewed appreciation in the artistic sphere.

The Laas Marble Wiki aims to provide all interested readers with a comprehensive insight into the millennia-old history, processing and use of [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marble marble], while also documenting important works made from Laas Marble throughout the world.

The wiki is divided into several thematic sections:

'''„[https://en.wiki.lasamarmo.it/wiki/Public_Works Public Works]“'''
This directory documents publicly accessible works made from Laas Marble from both the past and the present. The collection is divided into public monuments and public buildings.

'''„[https://en.wiki.lasamarmo.it/wiki/Image_Archiv Image Archiv]“'''
The image archive complements the “Public Works” directory. While the latter records the works in textual form, the image archive provides photographic documentation of the listed objects.

'''„[https://en.wiki.lasamarmo.it/wiki/Big_Monuments Big Monuments]“'''
This section is dedicated to extraordinary monumental historical works made from Laas Marble.

'''„[https://en.wiki.lasamarmo.it/wiki/Artists Artists]“'''
The artists’ directory presents contemporary sculptors and stonemasons who have created works from or with Laas Marble during at least the past three decades.

'''„[https://en.wiki.lasamarmo.it/wiki/Page_history Page history]“'''
This section guides readers through the long history of Laas Marble processing, whose origins reach back to the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neolithic Neolithic period].

'''„[https://en.wiki.lasamarmo.it/wiki/Topics_%26_Stories Topics & Stories]“'''
Here readers will find in-depth articles, stories and background reports on the historical and contemporary use of Laas Marble, complemented by images and documentation.

The sections “Public Works”, “Image Archiv” and “Artists” are open to user submissions. If you are aware of historical or contemporary works made from Laas Marble, or if you have personally created works using Laas Marble, we would be pleased to receive your information and contributions for publication in the Laas Marble Wiki.
=== Light of the North ===

Peter Brauchle’s studio opens toward the north. Fluorescent streaks of light in the sky resemble ribbons. The individual ribbons inspire through their diversity.

The sculpture ''Light of the North'' symbolizes inner stillness and arriving within oneself. The driving force of life lies in our inner peace — the strength to make the decisions that life asks of us.
